ITALIAN GOVERNMENT LAW REGARDING THE EXPORTATION OF ITALIAN FURNITURE

During 2005, as a direct result of the immense amount of counterfeiting being practiced against Italian products, the Italian Government published its intentions (Decree # 206) creating a law in which all Italian products leaving their country would have some form of proof attached which would give the end user the assurance that they were in fact purchasing the genuine article. In reality since that year the majority of manufacturers of Italian Furniture have been displaying this certification on their ranges.

In January 2010, this law was enhanced under Italian Bill No. 3125. This Bill specified exact requirements pertaining to the labelling and traceability of furniture items made in Italy. Whilst it tried to cover most products being manufactured and exported, it obviously had certain limitations. However, with regards to Italian Furniture they have managed to cover their intentions quite admirably by including the following legal requirements. In summary the Bill states:

that ALL furniture of Italian origin MUST have attached or enclosed to such furniture proof of such in the form of either
a) a label stating that the products used are of Italian origin;
b) where leather is used a cutting is to be attached which reflects the certification stamp of the specific leather used.

Whilst the full legal parameters are quite lengthy (as is the normal case in all Acts of Parliament) the essential ingredients are as above.

What this means to you the consumer is that if you do not see any of the above items included somewhere upon the furniture you are being told is Italian, you are in all likelihood looking at a counterfeit, manufactured at sub-standard standards and costing you more than the genuine article would in all probability be. In other words, Buyer Beware.
